Researchers from Nanyang Technological University created the planet’s first 3D printed bathroom that took a few hours to print in concrete casting successfully. What is a 3D printed bathroom? It is essentially a small 3D printed unfurnished room.
“The capability to print-on-demand allows businesses to save both of their manpower and inventory costs. The need to hold stock won’t be a burden as well. They can also redeploy their workers to perform higher-level responsibilities. More than that, this approach improves workplace safety. It’s no doubt because robots do the construction of the bathroom unit,” Professor Tan said.
In printing the first 3D printed bathroom on the planet, it took nine hours. The second bathroom that measures 1.6 X 1.5 X 2.8 m also took another day to print.
After printing, the researchers furnished the structures with drains, piping, showers, tiles, a toilet, and a flooring for almost five days.
Even though the procedure does not sound quick, the expert’s claim takes half the money and time to 3D print a bathroom. Unlike a prefabricated concrete cast bathroom, it is simpler to construct and more budget-friendly.
3D Printed Bathrooms Have Many Pros
Regularly constructed in many factories, prefabricated bathrooms are brought on-site to be assembled for most HDB flats. They are also used for condominiums that are non-landed residential government land sale places in the country.
But this requires extensive labour, which in turn can lead to high carbon emissions, unnecessary wastage, transport expenses, and other unexplainable expenditures. With the integration of 3D printing, reducing all these issues will be easy and convenient. It can also help build on-site, minimising labour costs. Another primary benefit of 3D printing is that it can build curvilinear profiles with rectilinear forms according to Mr Lie Liong Tjen, a team leader of the Sembcorp Design and Construction.
Conventional methods of constructing prefabricated bathrooms with wall panels, on the contrary, relatively affect the possibilities of design. It particularly limits the variety of designs. It is stressful to apply. While the results might be of poor quality, it could also be more expensive.
Printing a lattice shape and developing a lighter bathroom has also been possible with additive manufacturing technology. Compared to prefabricated bathrooms, it comes in a lighter weight. It is packed with curb value or aesthetic appeal. It is ergonomically useful, making it worth the investment.
Before, the procedure of developing 3D printable materials was complicated and time-consuming. It even required expertise or knowledge from mechanical engineering, architecture, and robotics research. But things have changed today. Since 2015, they have developed concrete mixtures for 3D printing. These materials consist of leftover ash from sand, clay, and coal power plant.
The resulting bathroom has also undergone the required tests to determine the level of robustness and strength. It was also revealed at the Nanyang Technological University School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
