In what seems like a blink of an eye, Cartoon Saloon has been serving us delightful animated delights for a quarter of a century. Led by the trinity of animation — Paul Young, Tomm Moore, and Nora Twomey — this studio has been more consistent than my morning coffee habit!
A Journey Full of Enchanted Flair
Accolades? Check. World-renowned films? Yep. Making us feel things we didn’t think were possible? Absolutely. With an Academy Award nomination, BAFTA, and Emmy wins under their belt, this animation powerhouse has taken us on some truly whimsical cinematic journeys.
Let’s raise our glass (and maybe even a donut) to 25 years of spellbinding, heart-tugging, and eyeball-enticing animations, all pouring out from a magic brew that is Cartoon Saloon in Kilkenny. Here’s to another quarter-century of making our imaginations run wild!

Initiated by Paul Young, Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey in 1999, this Kilkenny-originated studio has spawned renowned titles such as the feature films The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner, My Father’s Dragon and Wolfwalkers, and short features Late Afternoon, From Darkness, Somewhere Down The Line and Old Fangs along with the adored TV series Puffin Rock.
This podcast flashback delves into the Skwigly vaults to resurrect interviews with acclaimed directors Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey, Ross Stewart, Louise Bagnall and producer Nuria González Blanco.
As part of this episode, we also introduce a brand new interview with studio co-founder Paul Young, who launched his directorial career last year with the much-praised Screecher’s Reach, a notable highlight from the Star Wars Visions: Volume 2 series that bagged an Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement for Directing in an Animated Television/Broadcast Production and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation.
