Summarized: Animation is Taking Over London and We’re All For it!
In my humble and totally techie savvy opinion, the Fête du Cinéma d’Animation is setting up to be an unforgettable feast of French animation. I mean, who doesn’t want to be transported to la rue de l’anime without leaving the comfort of good old London? Prepare to boost your French finesse, likely without the jet lag and the overpriced éclairs. Whether it’s the excitement about Little Amélie or the anxiety to finish your popcorn before the screening starts, one thing’s for sure – London is going to feel a little more…magnifique this October. Or in a less posh way – Animation French invasion in 3…2…1…Ooh la la!

Join us for an animated cinematic delight as London’s French Institute showcases an array of fresh along with classic animations at the 24th Frition of Animation Cinema. Spanning the entire month from 4th to 31st October, the festival, suitable for all ages, is set to unfold at Ciné Lumière.
Mark your calendar for the preview of the captivating Little Amélie, a film inspired by Amélie Nothomb’s popular novel about her childhood, The Character of the Rain (Métaphysique des Tubes) slated for 25 October. The journey takes you to Japan, as seen through the eyes of an adventurous little girl eager to explore the world in her unique way.
The festival will also be graced with the London premiere of the much-anticipated Michel Gondry’s Maya, Give Me a Title. Witness the bond between Maya and her father, who lives in a different country, as he narrates nightly stories based on a title she suggests, which he then turns into a cartoon. Narrated by Pierre Niney, Gondry brings to life a poetic and whimsical journey. The screening will be followed by a free animated stop-motion workshop with paper cuttings on 30 October.
Leading sci-fi animator René Laloux (of La Planète sauvage fame) and acclaimed Jean Giraud – popularly known as Mœbius present the cult animation The Time Masters (12 & 18 Oct) in 4K restoration. An introduction by renowned writer and curator Michael Leader, the co-creator & co-host of animation podcast Ghibliotheque, precedes the screening on 18 October.
Don’t miss out on the special screenings arranged for the debut of Night of the Zoopocalypse. The screening on 26 October is specially designed for children with sensory difficulties as a relaxed screening. On 31 October, kids are invited to indulge in a colouring session, either before or after the film screening.
Adding to the allure are a collection of French animated shorts (19 Oct) and screenings of The Most Precious of Cargoes (11 Oct) by the Oscar-winning director Michel Hazanavicius, and Zarafa (4 & 29 Oct) by the talented duo Rémi Bezançon and Jean-Christophe Lie.
