Well, well, we’ve got ourselves a comeback story here. After what seemed like eons in the animation wilderness, Olga and Priit Pärn have made their triumphant return with the premiere of their new film, ‘Luna Rossa’. The duo is serving us some major animation realness, reminding everyone (as if we could forget) that they’re a force to reckon with in the 3D animation world. So grab your popcorn, your 3D glasses, and perhaps a little bit of Italian flair, because the Pärns are about to take us on another roller-coaster ride of animation awesomeness. Essentially, it’s like the ‘Avengers Endgame’ of the animation world- a much-awaited return, spectacular visuals, and an experience to remember!
The animation dream team, Olga and Priit Pärn, have revealed their latest cinematic masterpiece. The much-anticipated film, a collaborative production of Eesti Joonisfilm and French studio Miyu Productions, titled Luna Rossa, is set to debut on August 21 at the revered International Animation Festival Imaginaria in Conversano, Italy.
Following a hiatus, the Pärns have re-emerged with Luna Rossa, their first new release since 2017’s piece The Four Seasons – Summer. Having taken nearly four years to create, the movie introduces the pair’s pioneering use of Motion Capture technique, layering recorded actors’ movements with 3D puppets and hand-drawn animation. The film, orchestrated in collaboration with Tanel Saar, features the exceptional performance of Karolin Jürise, Tanel Saar and Ago Soots from the VAT theater.
Set in Italy, possibly Naples, the plot unravels complex relationships between two men and two women, woven meticulously to warrant multiple interpretations. The narrative, however, relentlessly pursues a definitive conclusion – a secret that remains with the movie creators to let the joy of discovery be with the film’s audience.
While plans for an Estonian premiere of Luna Rossa are still under wraps, the global premiere is slated for the upcoming Wednesday (August 21) at the prestigious Imaginaria Animation Festival in southern Italy’s Conversano. The film is a contender in the event’s International Short Film Main Competition.
A film truly comes alive when it elicits a reaction from the audience. And we couldn’t hope for a better inauguration than our pseudo-Italian film getting its first applause from an authentic Italian audience!
– Olga and Priit Pärn
The Imaginaria International Animation Festival will be held from 18 to 25 August in Conversano in southern Italy.
Luna Rossa is brought to life by producers Kalev Tamm, Emmanuel-Alain Raynal, and Pierre Baussaron. The film owes its finance to the Estonian Film Institute, the Estonian Cultural Capital, Giga, the French Center national du Cinéma and de l’Image animée (CNC), Pictanova.
