Barcelona: The Beating Heart of European Animation
Barcelona Basks In Animation Glory
It’s clear that Barcelona is gearing up for its annual recital of ‘Animated Happily Ever Afters’, with Animar_BCN sauntering into town for the third year running. The who’s who of the animation world are pulling on their trendiest sneakers, ready to strut, converse, and (possibly) argue over the potential future Toy Story spin-offs. Knowledgeable folks and creative alignments arriving from across Europe, it looks set to be a gathering of epic Pixar proportions.
In my ever so humble ‘hot take’ or should we say ‘animated take’? This is less of an ‘Animation Convention’, more an ‘Animation Invasion.’ The event truly showcases that Barcelona isn’t just the home of delicious paella and salivatingly-good Sangria, it’s brewed quite a reputation as the Disneyland of the Animation Industry in Europe. So, grab a sketch pad, put on your Mickey Mouse ears, and come join the Euro-animation blitzkrieg unfolding in delightful Barcelona. The event isn’t just playing with Post-Its folks, it’s serious business!
From 26-28th November, Barcelona will once again buzz with the excitement of Animar_BCN, the grand European Animation Convention that brings together 90 delegates and 60 prestigious European organisations of the animation sector. The convention promises comprehensive discussions on the current state and future of European animation, with representatives from 24 European countries.
Begun in 2022, Animar_BCN initiative, by PROA and ProAnimats, has consistently fostered competitiveness, cooperation, and visibility of the European animation, culminating in its third successful run this year.
This year’s convention highlights an intriguing debate on the implications of artificial intelligence in animation. The focus will lean on the effects on intellectual property, discussed in a working group led by Lucia Recalde of the Creative Europe Unit, MEDIA, DG CONNECT and Moe Honan, Vice Chairwoman of Animation in Europe.
Green animation or the sustainability initiatives within the sector will be another topic dissected by industry stakeholders. Potential achievements of a European standard will be a prime topic in a working group panel led by Carlota Guerrero and Dirk Beinhold, both of Animation in Europe.
The legal framework of European animation will not be left out with discussions on the implementation of AVMSD and other directives affecting independent production companies and the retention of intellectual property. Els Hendrix and Philippe Alessandri, leaders in the culture and media sector, will moderate these discussions.
Focus will also be directed on the promotion of European animation co-productions, with emphasis on public funding, minority collaborations, pan-European co-productions, and tax incentives. The discussion will be moderated by Alex Traila and Ivan Agenjo, both Vice Chairs of Animation in Europe.
A highlight of the Animar_BCN convention is the insightful discussion on European co-production in professional event “Let’s talk Europe”, demonstrating collaborations among producers, distributors, channels and institutions across Europe. Case studies include the film Rock Bottom and DeAPlaneta, under the guidance of Animation in Europe’s Treasurer, Pablo Jordi.
The four working groups will share their conclusions at a public session on the morning of 28th November at Blanquerna-Ramon Llull University, facilitated by Cristina Angelucci, editor of the European Animation Journal.
