BBC Studios Kids & Family Cooks Up New Anime-Inspired Series With Blink Industries
– BBC Studios Kids & Family is hustling up an anime-inspired series for the younguns, aimed at children aged ranging from 8-12 years old. The new series is their first creation in collaboration with Blink Industries. Talk about new alliances!
– The current working title, ‘Children Vs Battle SuperStars’, screams fun and battle-time! Hopefully, the final name will live up to this same excitement.
– The would-be series is planned as a 22 episode, each 22 minutes long, martial arts showdown held in a modern fantastical world. We’re basically talking Matrix meets Narnia… for kids.
– What’s cooking in this cauldron seems to be nostalgia blended with innovation; the recipe explores and uses inspiration from classic martial arts-genre stories. Hopefully, “inspiration” doesn’t translate to tear-jerking death scenes as in classic anime. We’re watching you, BBC Studios Kids & Family!
The White Belt Take:
From the sounds of it, BBC Studios Kids & Family and Blink Industries are shooting to knock it out of the playground with their anime-inspired martial arts series. Infusing elements from classic martial arts and anime genres with a modern twist could prove a masterstroke, that is, if they don’t end up stealing and breaking fans’ hearts with classic anime catastrophe robot moves. The project’s got us in a half nelson of anticipation. Let’s just hope that the working title ‘Children Vs Battle SuperStars’ doesn’t mean we’re about to witness 8-year-olds going Mortal Kombat. Calm down, BBC and Blink, we want excitement, not nightmares! Oh well, grab your popcorn, it’s anime shower time, folks!

The working title of the project is “BattleStars: Children Unleashed”, a 22-minute episodic spectacle exploring the funny consequences when regular kids confront extraordinary battle ‘Super Stars’.
The creative brains behind the operation are animation duo Remus Buznea and Kyriaki (Kiki) Kyriakou, also known for their contributions to Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, and the award-winning short “Dateless”. Their fondness for martial arts-themed media gave birth to this concept.
“The series came about from our online defeats in fighting video games at the hands of youngsters,” Remus & Kiki humourously admit:
Through a ‘tournament’ narrative, we aim to inject fun into competitiveness and satirically interpret martial arts genre tropes.
Speaking about the new series, Grainne McNamara, VP Development Live Action and Animation at BBC Studios Kids & Family, says:
At the Annecy festival, we are thrilled to share more details about the series, which features an engaging mix of the ordinary with wonderfully weird characters and scenarios, which we believe audiences will love.

The anime-inspired project is a result of a two-year agreement with Blink Industries, an innovative UK-based studio feted with Emmy, Annie and BAFTA accolades. They are primarily known for their creative blend of multimedia in family-oriented content and are the producers of the series.
Blink Industries’ Head of Animation and Executive Producer, Benjamin Lole, amps the anticipation:
We can’t wait for the debut of BattleStars: Children Unleashed. Working with Remus and Kiki, as well as BBC Studios Kids and Family, has been a fantastic journey. With their unique humour and striking visuals, we believe we have a fresh twist on the tournament genre that will cater to its significant and keen fan base. We are ready to compete with big icons like Naruto, Dragonball and Pokemon.
