A Bewitching Balkan Whirl: Anibar 2025
Anibar 2025, the festival we’ve all been waiting for, has finally rocked its way onto our doorsteps – or should we say, our animation tablets. This event bloomed with cords of Balkan charm entwined with silky threads of uncertainty and, of course, the cherished world of animation. With the promise of unforgettable late-night screenings (who needs sleep, anyway?) and parties more atmospheric than a Pixar film, Anibar 2025 was the animation extravaganza we deserved. The tours de force? A captivating logo that’s more hypnotising than John Lasseter’s Hawaiian shirt collection and creative venues that scoff at the idea of conformity.
Review: An Unexpected Animated Adventure
Anibar, oh Anibar! How long we’ve waited in our digital dens, ever hungry for your arrival. And what a menu you served – a feast of animation, draped in uncertainty, wrapped up with a ribbon of Balkan charm. The real show-stopper though? Your smorgasbord of film screenings that began when the moon was high and the coyotes called, much more thrilling than any 3 am Netflix binge we’ve had. So cheers to Anibar, may we soon again bask in your glow, dancing our way into the dawn in venues that wouldn’t be caught dead without their originality badge.

Ever wondered what makes Anibar, the highly renowned animation festival, so special? In this blog, we shed light on its enticing allure, riveting cultural experiences, and inspiring impact on the animation industry
I finally made my dream come true by attending the 16th edition of Anibar, set in the captivating city of Peja, Kosovo. This year, the compelling theme revolved around the enigmatic acronym of WTF?! (What’s The Future / What The F**k ?!). Intriguingly, this theme wasn’t restricted just as a tagline, rather it was visually embodied across the entire festival. Here’s a sneak peak into one of my favorite festival trailers:
Peja: More Than Just a Festival City
Anibar isn’t just an ordinary festival, it has evolved into an integral catalyst facilitating the growth of Kosovo’s animation industry. Founded by passionate enthusiasts led by Vullnet Sanaja, it aims to nurture an animation community through shared knowledge, skills, and experiences. What started with an €500 budget and 80 films from friends has now turned into one of the most popular European animation festivals featuring 160 films from 51 countries.
Another captivating aspect of Anibar is its efforts to shape the animation landscape through educational and community initiatives. The Anibar Animation Academy, for example, is the only formal animation education offering in the country. Furthermore, Anibar has commandeered management of the city’s main event venue – the Jusuf Gërvalla cinema – and transformed it into a cultural hotspot teeming with a variety of film screenings, musical events, and community activities.
What Makes Anibar Stand Out?
What sets Anibar apart is its unique approach in creating a sense of community; the festival borders on blending in aspects of social life. From the morning yoga sessions, mountain picnics, Albanian and English music fests to notably amusing paddle boat film programmes.
Behind the success of Anibar pumps the heart of its devoted volunteers who ensure the smooth running of the festival and the warmth of their welcoming presence makes you feel a part of the family.
Must-See Highlights at Anibar
Besides its wonderful experiences, Anibar is home to a diverse and thought-provoking programme which not only includes a selection of films but also encouraging insightful discussions.
The screenings encompass various categories featuring animated documentaries, student films, experimental shorts, commissioned work, international highlights and many more.
Apart from the conventional, Anibar has initiated standout initiatives such as Pitch It! and Anibar Pro: Genesis. These provide a breakthrough platform for filmmakers, giving the necessary support and exposure to emerging directors.
Experience Anibar!
If you’re an animator and your film gets selected for Anibar, my advice is simple: DON’T MISS OUT! Pack your bags and dive into this incredible experience. See how Anibar is not just a festival but a platform for international guests to share their knowledge, passion, and forge new relationships in this arena of creative exchange.
