The creative duo, Lisa Ott and Owen Thomas, unveil their latest animated project Dragfox where screen icon McKellen and singing sensation De Campo bring life to leading character.

The film, selected for both Creative Artists Agency’s 2024 Moebius Showcase and the Yugo BAFTA Animation Award’s longlist, introduces us to Sam, a kid journeying towards self-identity, with a magically musical fox that helps unearth the power of diversity.

The creators stress how vital it is to highlight a young trans protagonist, observing:

Our goal was to celebrate Sam’s journey and show that by truly listening, we can all help to make the world a little less intimidating. Who better to deliver that message of empathy and understanding than Sir Ian McKellen?

Engaging with the film’s theme, McKellen reflected on his personal journey:

I remember growing up post-WWII, with more pressing concerns than understanding the life of a young gay boy – a term, then, not even coined. As this film emphasizes, growing up is all about discovering and accepting your own identity.

For trans individuals today, I empathize with the lack of that understanding. And the most impactful way to impart a message isn’t through a speech or a book, but rather to evoke a smile and foster understanding, which Dragfox beautifully executes.

The renowned Divina De Campo expresses their enthusiasm about starring in the film:

Contributing to Dragfox is unreal. I share a role with a true legend and role model!

This film is more than a celebration of individuality and diversity, it’s also a beacon of hope for anyone grappling to find where they truly belong.

De Campo further spoke on the film’s significance within the LGBTQ+ community, noting:

For a trans youth, seeing oneself represented in movies or television is monumental.

The tale of Sam and Ginger Snap serves to remind us all that our distinctiveness is our greatest asset, and that acceptance and love can come from the least expected sources.

Prepare to engage in an evocative exploration of identity, acceptance, and the transformative power of understanding with Dragfox. This film spotlights the journey of trans youth and the world of drag in an empowering narrative.
