My Hot Take
Keep Calm and Chirpy On
3D animation never felt more exhilarating… or hilarious.
Listening to our fine-feathered friend, it’s clear that his flight school slogan might as well be “Try, try again… then, try some more!” Chirpy’s madcap misadventures in aviation and audacious resilience turn him into a bird of play rather than a bird of prey. The greyscale siblings watching from the sidelines provide the perfect contrast, amplifying Chirpy’s colourful courage in the face of gravity’s grumble.
Despite his many crashes and burns, Chirpy’s indomitable spirit makes him soar higher than any animation bird before him. Sure, we’ve had our share of high-flying heroes, from Buzz Lightyear’s “To infinity and beyond!” to Daffy Duck’s… well, mad ‘duckiness.’ But it’s Chirpy, in his relentless and comically endearing quest to conquer the skies, who really takes our hearts to new heights.
In the grand scheme of 3D animation, ‘First Flight’ gives new meaning to the term “hilarious failure.” Our blue buddy’s outlandish attempts, rather than discouraging his dreams of sky supremacy, only fuel his beaky belief that it’s the journey, not the destination, that counts. Because in the end, isn’t that the real fun of animation – seeing the impossible become the inevitable, even if it takes a detour through the indescribably ridiculous?
So let’s join hands, or rather wings, with Chirpy as he shows us the uplifting truth: That the greatest flights start with the most grounding falls. Chirpy, we salute you – you are the ‘Tweety Bird’ for the modern generation. Keep chirping, keep trying, and keep making us laugh. To borrow a phrase from another famous flier, “I believe I can fly… I may crash a lot, but hey, that’s half the fun!”
Meet Chirpy, a dazzling blue bird in a family of grey birds, who is unique in more ways than you can imagine. While his siblings seem to ace everything, Chirpy’s adventurous trials at flight usually end in calamity. Armed with quirky inventions and daring leaps of faith, he’s all set to soar and touch the sky.
Inspired by her ADHD, Director Molly Hill channeled it into her creativity, molding Chirpy to radiate boundless enthusiasm, unpredictable problem-solving skills, and a spirit of tenacity. Her mission was to sketch a character portraying neurodivergent traits with positivity and light; a character that children and adults alike can connect with and cheer on.
Combining warmth, wit, and a dash of rocky landings, First Flight takes you along on an unruly yet enchanting journey to discover your wings.
What were the inspirations behind it?
As the director, I imprinted a lot of myself into Chirpy. I am ADHD persistent, and Chirpy’s irrepressible zest, unpredictable mind, and never-say-die spirit echo my view of the world. My aim was to illustrate a character that embodies neurodivergent traits positively – one that all kids can identify and empathize with.
Here’s some behind-the-scenes scoop…
This film was produced as my final major project during my University days, while I was studying BA Hons in Computer Animation.
My goal was to narrate the story of a bird that mirrored my own formative years – feeling like an outsider, trying too hard, dreaming immeasurably, and experiencing social hitches – yet never throwing in the towel. I trust there are many out there who can resonate with this, and I hope they can see themselves reflected in Chirpy.
How did the project come together?
The animation was brought to life using Maya, while substance painter was used for the modeling. After Effects and Premier Pro were employed for post-production enhancements and compilation. What makes this project even more special is that it was entirely a student affair, with a dynamic team of 2nd and 3rd-year university students! The film’s production kicked off in January 2025 and was wrapped up by May 2025.
