Relevance of the Murakami Award

My Two Cents
First off, let’s take a moment to appreciate the pun-tastic opportunity that the combination of “Monster Entertainment” and “Murakami award” provides. I mean, it’s almost like this award was custom made for Andrew and his team of animation monsters.
Jokes aside, nothing screams ‘achievement’ louder than raking in awards, and Andrew Fitzpatrick is no exception – hanging his freshly won Murakami with his leprechaun hat. It’s a true testimony to the power of creativity, hard work, and probably a lot of pixel dust. Beyond Fitzpatrick’s personal delight, this award highlights the significant talent within the Irish animation industry. So folks, keep your eyes peeled! The next animation megahit might just come out of the Emerald Isle, made by a bunch of lovable animation monsters!
The 13th Murakami Award Goes to Monster Entertainment’s Chairman Andrew Fitzpatrick. The Dublin-based company is highly recognized for its work in distribution, production, and brand management.
Upon his announcement as the winner, Andrew expressed, “This award is an honor and a testament to the thriving and talented animation industry in Ireland. I am proud to be part of this creative community and collaborate with incredible individuals. The Murakami award is the highest accolade in the Irish animation industry, and I am profoundly humbled to receive this recognition.”
From 1985 -1995, Andrew led Don Bluth Studios, the then largest animation studio in Europe. Known for hits like the Land Before Time and All Dogs Go to Heaven, Andrew raised a massive $160 million for the studio’s films. After its closure, Andrew served a key role in bringing The Storykeepers TV series to life, which later became one of the most successful Irish animation series.
The Chairman and his company, Monster Entertainment, have contributed to acclaimed works such as the Oscar-winning Harvie Krumpet along with other Oscar-nominated works including The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello and Give Up Yer Aul Sins.
Discussing this year’s award, Ethna Murakami said, “We are overjoyed to acknowledge Andrew Fitzpatrick as this year’s Murakami Award recipient. His friendship with Jimmy and his esteemed reputation in the industry make him more than worthy of this recognition.”
Andrew’s extensive experience in animation has significantly impacted the global entertainment industry. Under his guidance, Monster Entertainment has distributed television series in over 200 countries. Some of the company’s key projects include: Jungle Beat, The Day Henry Met, and Earth to Luna.
Moreover, Monster’s portfolio consists of adult animations, documentaries, and short films, all of which have received Oscar and Emmy recognitions. In 2013, Monster won the Distributor of the Year award at Cartoon Forum and was nominated once again in 2023.
Commenting on the award, Cathal Gaffney, Managing Director, Brown Bag Films added, “Andrew’s career in animation spans back to the Don Bluth era. He has produced and distributed countless Irish animated films and TV programmes internationally. He is truly a backbone of the Irish animation industry and is always willing to mentor younger studios and producers. The Murakami Award recognizes these contributions, and it couldn’t have gone to a more deserving recipient.”
