The MOVE Summit is back baby and it’s determined to put Scottish VFX and animation on the global map with more swagger than Sean Connery in a kilt. We have a stellar line-up from industry whizz-bangs to newborn Picassos of the digital art world. Mark your calendars, folks, because the ‘Animation-Industrial complex’ is planning an invasion from 19th – 21st February 2025. Brace yourself for three days of mind-blowing talks, enlightening workshops, and the cream of creative reviews. The MOVE Summit is all set to inspire captivating stories in animation and VFX, echoing louder than the skirl of a bagpipe. Eh, maybe keep the haggis. That stuff is delicious.
Get Ready for MOVE Summit 2025: Scotland’s Premier Animation and VFX Event! From 19th to 21st February, the historic Pleasance Courtyard will host a convergence of industry leaders, creative minds, budding students, and educators – all gathering in Edinburgh to celebrate the milestones of this dynamic industry and inspire the next wave of artists.
Over three solid days, the MOVE Summit provides a comprehensive line-up of talks, workshops, creative reviews, screenings, recruiting opportunities, networking sessions, and platforms for business development. The first day is dedicated to Emerging Talent Day (19th February), focusing on skill development tailored to students. The subsequent two days (20th – 21st February) are designed to bring practitioners together from across the UK and beyond, showcasing Scotland’s contribution to a global audience.
This year’s schedule highlights include keynote presentations by:
- Chris McDonald– Visualisation Supervisor, Framestore explpring visualization techniques in creating iconic film scenes,
- Mike Mitchell, Director sharing insights from his career and work on major IPs including Shrek, Madagascar, Lego, Spongebob Squarepants, and many more,
- Renfrewshire-born James Hodgart– Environmental Model Supervisor, Walt Disney Animation Studios discussing his work in 3D environments, including recent projects Moana 2 and Disney+’s upcoming Tiana,
- Maurissa Horwitz– Lead Editor, Pixar giving a behind the scenes tour of Inside Out 2, discussing how the movie’s iconic alarm scene came about and the emotions that didn’t make the cut.
Highlights from the rest of the programme include talks from Bart Yates from Blinkink on the company’s journey from a boutique production company to an original development studio, Stephen McNally sharing the adventure of creating HBO mixed media special Peter & the Wolf.
Kate O’Connor– Executive Chair, Animation UK will outline the Animation Blueprint for Growth, a strategic roadmap to drive growth of the animation industry both locally and across the UK.
Touches of originality from Nexus Studios, as Hannah Lau-Walker explores the intersection of personal and commissioned work, and Deborah Casswell takes delegates on a journey into the creation of the immersive mindfulness experience Headspace XR.
Ben Krolick, Head of Animation, MPC giving an exclusive insight into MPC’s work in visual effects and animation, featuring behind-the-scenes looks at Mufasa: The Lion King and discussing the future of animation.
