You know, if they’ve got time to migrate amidst all the chaos, then opening an animation studio must be a walk in the park. Only a Paper Owl, wouldn’t you say? What to do next? Well, if the Pablo spin-off is anything to go by, I’d hurry to get your popcorn and kits, kiddos (and let’s admit, adults too)—our weekends just got more animated!

Internationally recognized and BAFTA-nominated production house Paper Owl Films has inaugurated a fresh studio in Belfast as part of the company’s expansion endeavors and strategic objectives, aiming to broaden its array of in-house productions and holistic global partnerships.

Currently, Paper Owl is in the production stage of animated show Pablo’s spin-off targeted for 5-8 years olds, dubbed Pablo: Boy Meets School, in collaboration with BBC Children’s, Crayola Studios, and RTÉJr along with CAKE. Furthermore, they’re working with King Banana and Cake on a preschool animation series Nikhil & Jay for CBeebies. Lastly, with a Celtic inspiration at its core, the anime for kids Lí Ban has recently begun airing in Ireland and Wales, with 52 more episodes underway.

Besides augmenting its own portfolio, the newly established 5,000 square-foot studio in Belfast will accommodate Paper Owl’s primary creative team working on various facets like animation, production, design, live action, and post-production. The expansion strategy also emphasizes cultivating stronger global relationships and maximizing co-production opportunities.

Gavin Halpin, the Managing Director at Paper Owl Films expresses: “We are overjoyed with our new studio. It’s an astounding space that will allow us to enhance our company culture, nurture team spirit and creativity, and expand our training modules. While remote working has led to remarkable innovation in animation pipelines, we yearned for that intimate connection intrinsic to the creative sphere. With the implementation of a Hybrid pipeline, our projects can achieve maximum technical efficiency whilst maintaining team adaptability, promoting in-person collaborations, and continuing our work with international talent. It’s an exhilarating phase of rejuvenation and growth at Paper Owl Films, and we extend our gratitude to all our partners who persistently support our mission of creating enriching and thus inspiring content for children across the globe.”
