With Inside Out achieving almost mythical status over the last decade, a sequel was always going to be a risky endeavor. Yet against all odds, Inside Out 2 manages to elucidate the abstract concepts of emotions that its predecessor had integrated into a kid-friendly adventure narrative.

With a narrative that embraces the complexity of dealing with emotions, particularly as we age, Inside Out 2 makes its mark. It’s a daring move but one that adds a layer of relatability and depth to this animated masterpiece.

In Inside Out 2, our favorite emotional gang–Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust–have to deal with a newcomer: Anxiety. This is an interesting direction for the film, as it triggers a humorous–yet contemplative–journey inside Riley’s mind.

The first act of Inside Out 2 successfully combines philosophical questions about life, fear, and joy with brilliantly timed comedy–building upon the depth of emotional exploration that the first film so masterfully introduced.

Beyond the plot, the animation is stunning and the film introduces two of its most memorable characters – Bloofy and Lance Slashblade, who, although their presence is fleeting, add a distinct flavor to the humor and aesthetics of the movie.

This sequel achieves something many others can’t – it flies in the face of the odds and delivers a message about Anxiety being a part of human life in a convincing and impactful way. It’s a movie that is sure to pull at your heartstrings just as much as its predecessor.

There is no question that Inside Out 2 is yet another feather in Pixar’s hat. A distinct voice in the world of animation dealing with themes of adulthood and emotional growth – it’s a movie that you’ll wish was around when you were growing up.

Inside Out 2 releases in UK cinemas on 14 June 2024.
