The Hive Studio: From Animation Bees to Greek Gods

The Hive Studio, known for its honey-sweet animation works, is extending its antennae to the gorgeous Greek land of gods and heroes. Partnered with ANIMASYROS productions, they are creating something worthy of an Agora meeting – The Hive Greece. This new venture aims to build a colossal animation Acropolis and gather talent and resources like a bee colony around nectar fields. They seem ready to provide a highly demanded boost to the local animation industry and lead it to the animation Olympics. More so, they are stirring the European-wide co-production honey pot, aiming to seduce more European bees into their Greek hive.

Personal Hot Take:

In this buzzing news, ‘The Hive Studio’ showcases its ambition, reaching for the skies not unlike their winged mascots. It seems that The Hive wishes to produce more than honey; it aspires to create a honeycomb network of talent across the southern Mediterranean region. So, Greek animators and other European bees, it’s time to pack your pollen baskets and get ready for some cross-pollination. Let’s hope this Greek base turns out to be the ‘Hive Olympus’ in the film animation world. Who knows, we might all need to learn ‘bee-speak’ soon! Now that will be a story to buzz about.

Pioneering animation powerhouse The Hive Studio reveals the opening of its new branch, The Hive Greece, in collaboration with ANIMASYROS productions. The Athens-based expansion and strategic partnership aims to consolidate talent and resources of the South Mediterranean region in a bid to bolster the regional animation industry and encourage European co-productions.

Established as a global creative nucleus, The Hive Studio is celebrated for its diverse visual and technical expertise in animation across a range of genres and styles. Its accolades include the Oscar-nominated short film Letter to a Pig. The studio was founded by Oscar-nominated producer Amit Russell Gicelter (Black Slide, Butterfly Kiss).

Located in Athens, ANIMASYROS Productions is the driving force behind the vibrant animation film festival ANIMASYROS International Animation Festival, the most prominent of its kind in Greece.

The two entities have jointly worked on several projects, among them the short film P, directed by Stelios Koupetoris and co-financed by the Greek Film Center. P bagged the ASIFA-Hellas Award for Best Screenplay and earned selections at numerous festivals, including the Drama International Short Film Festival and the Tirana International Film Festival.

This promising alliance will enable The Hive Greece to pool local talent and bolster the domestic industry’s standing in the global animation arena. By focusing on globally appealing stories that cross cultural boundaries, alongside producing authentic Greek content, The Hive Greece will promote new content collaborations with European production houses backed by a 40% rebate on foreign investment.

Apart from production, the Greek offshoot will provide a range of animation-centric training programs to hone budding talent, starting with the recently launched Toon Boom masterclass.

I’m incredibly thrilled about syncing up with the Greek industry. Over recent months, we’ve made significant strides in development, production, and collaboration. This feels like a natural progression for our company, and I look forward to discovering future prospects.
