Let’s Get Ready for the Animation Celebration
Y’all get ready, because it’s that time of year again when the Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards roll out the red carpet. With the registration now open, it’s the perfect opportunity for animators to sprint toward their creative caves and meticulously design a masterpiece worthy of winning. And not just any award, we’re talking about the 7th edition of the prestigious accolade. (I’m lookin’ at you, every 3D animation artist EVER!)
Put on your party shoes, or rather your ‘animation arsenals’, as the grand presentation makes its return to the Teatro Leal in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife. (Why should Hollywood have all the fun, right?) The dates are out, folks! The mega animation event will be painting the town red on May 9, 10, and 11, 2024.
In my humble and humorous opinion, there can never be too many awards celebrating creativity. So let’s rally behind these overworked and overlooked artists…not just to stroke egos but to acknowledge genuine talent. Just remember, in the world of animation, it’s not all about makin’ the cartoons dance, it’s about telling a story that will tickle the funny bones of millions…and hopefully, the ever-so-critical Quirino Judges. So, fasten your seatbelts, crack those knuckles, and prepare for a ride full of shaders, splines, and … suspense! Who knows, you might be the next rising star of our beloved animation world. Break a mouse!
Get excited for the 7th Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards! Registrations are now open for this annual celebration of talent and achievements in the Ibero-American animation industry. To be hosted in the phenomenal Teatro Leal, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, from 9th till 11th of May, 2024 it’s an event bathed in creativity and cultural exchange beginning in 2018.
Submissions will compete in seven main categories: Feature Film, Series, Short Film, School Short Film, Commissioned Film, Video Game Animation and for the first time this year, Music Video. These categories are introduced to honor the creative minds who have pushed the bounds of animation into new disciplines. The top contenders will also go neck to neck in three technical categories: Visual Development, Animation Design, and Sound Design and Original Music.
This call is for works predominantly produced in one of the 23 Ibero-American countries. Feature films, series, and video game animations should have been released between June 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023 while for the other categories, works released in 2023 will be accepted. Submissions must be registered through the Festhome platform by December 14, 2023, before 23:59 (Spanish time). Rules for participation are available at this link.
Submissions will be evaluated by a Selection Committee who will nominate six works per category, which will be announced in mid-February 2024. Afterwards, an International Jury will shortlist three finalists per category, who will compete for the accolades to be awarded at the ceremony on May 11 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
In the last edition, Portuguese animation reigned supreme bagging four of the nine awards, including Best Feature Film for “Nayola” by José Miguel Ribeiro and Best Short Film for “Garbage Man” by Laura Gonçalves. The Best Series award was bagged by the Spanish film “Jasmine & Jambo” by Silvia Cortés. These winners were among the 223 submissions from 18 countries.
Besides the awards, the Quirino Awards will host the Co-Production and Business Forum from May 9 to 11. This forum targets promoting Ibero-American animation works and projects, with the participation of 148 companies from 26 countries, resulting in more than 1,200 professional meetings last year.
Quirino on the Global Stage
Since its launch in 2018, the Quirino Awards has become a key platform for promoting Ibero-American animation internationally. Last year, it carved a significant presence in international festivals such as Annecy (France), Pixelatl (Mexico), Animation! Ventana Sur (Argentina) and more.
The awards are also part of The Ibero-American Animation League (La Liga de la Animación Iberoamericana), an alliance formed to promote regional projects globally. The feature film “Cleo y la selva mágica” by Estefanía Piñeres, produced by Letrario (Colombia) was the winning project of its fifth edition.
Moreover, the Quirino Awards also played a supporting role in the Mentoring Program for Latin American Female Creators of Animation! Ventana Sur, which mentors five female directors on production, script and pitching. With such a variety of activities, the Quirino Awards offers a comprehensive platform to showcase and develop the very best in Ibero-American animation.
