Die-hard readers of Skwigly might recognize the name Tania Vincent, who wrote for the magazine years ago. Her journey has since progressed beyond that of a successful animator; she’s blossomed into a celebrated director and writer, with co-director credits on animated films such as Scary Girl and Combat Wombat: Back 2 Back.
Tania’s newest endeavour, The Sloth Lane, has awarded her the title of the first female director for an animated feature in the Australian film industry. The film, which earned recognition at numerous international film festivals last year, will officially be available to UK viewers on 14th February. The story features Laura, an exuberant sloth, and her slower-paced family as they move to bustling Sanctuary City from their once quiet lives to open a restaurant, all while grappling with personal challenges as a family.
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to interview Tania and learn about her journey since collaborating with Skwigly. She shared insights on a gamut of topics like the Australian animation industry’s renaissance in recent years, and the challenges of writing a story that touches on serious subjects often overlooked in family-oriented animated films.
