* The Rising of Lusitania AnimaDoc FF festival made its sixth cruise at the alternative art club UV in the aptly named city of ŁÓDŹ, which just so happens to be Polish for “BOAT”.
* Participants were treated to an exciting September spanning four Sundays (01/09/2024, 08/09/2024, 15/09/2024, 22/09/2024) filled to the brim with exceptional animated docs from around the globe. A heady total of 40 films showcased the best and brightest in documentary animation.
* The belle of the ball was undoubtedly ‘The Meatseller.’ This animated masterpiece walked away with the coveted Grand Prix Prize – a sweeping victory that left no one in doubt of the film’s talent and narrative prowess.
The Rising of Lusitania AnimaDoc Festival
A Boatload of Animated Docs in a City named ‘Boat’
‘The Meatseller’ Claims the Grand Prix Prize
Attempting to summarize this swashbuckling soirée of animated docs is like trying to cram a cruise ship into a lifeboat. But one thing’s for sure, the Rising of Lusitania AnimaDoc FF festival made quite a splash at the UV club in the city labelled ‘BOAT’ in Polish (not sure if that was on purpose or a happy accident). Four glorious Sundays in September were set aside for the awe-inspiring spectacle of animated documentaries, the festival version of stuffing your face with a buffet of world-class animation.
The cherry on this multi-layered cake of moving illustrations was ‘The Meatseller.’ This cinematic work of art managed to secure the Grand Prix Prize and butchered (pun very much intended) its competition in the process. Leaving the festival, you couldn’t help but feel like you’d sailed the world in a humble lifeboat, taking in the vibrant sights and sounds of global animation.
The vibrant journey of the SIXTH edition of RISING OF LUSITANIA AnimaDoc Film Festival has successfully wrapped up in the Bohemian art sanctuary of ŁÓDŹ (meaning BOAT in Polish). We proudly commemorated four vibrant Sundays of September (01, 08, 15, 22.09.2024) showcasing 40 spectacular animated documentaries from 22 different nations.
The films, grouped into professional, student and the intriguing MOCKDOC categories, indeed presented a real conundrum for both the Jury and audience given their sheer brilliance. Ultimately, the Grand Prix in the Professional category was bestowed upon THE MEATSELLER by Margherita Giusti (Italy, 2023), and in the Student category, the award went to IS THIS NOW THE TIME I SHOULD LET YOU GO? by Yi-Chin Tsai from Aalto University (Taiwan/Finland, 2023).
In contrast, the consensus of the Student Jury hailed I DIED IN IRPIN by Anastasiia Falileiev (Czech Republic/Ukraine, 2024) as the best professional animated documentary, and MY MOM by Agnieszka Popińska from the Łódź Film School (Poland, 2024) as the best student documentary. Moreover, both jury panels presented the Make-Believe Award to the MERMAID COW SAGA by Sashko Danylenko.
The audience, on the other hand, voted for films like ANITA, LOST IN THE NEWS by Behzad Nalbandi (Iran, 2023), COLOURFUL WHITE by Jiahao Li, Central Saint Martins, UAL (China/UK, 2024) and LITTER PECKER by Maisie Race, University of the West of England (United Kingdom, 2024).
