ThunderCats! Ho! – 40 Years of Action-Packed Feline Adventures

Four Decades of Cat-tastic Action

Hey, even after 40 years, they still got the roar! They’ve aged like fine cream (or should I say Catnip?). Who’d have thought that a group of feline-humanoid hybrids could keep multitudes entertained for so long? The only question that remains is whether they can still maintain these claw-some adventures in the face of their biggest threat to date – the rise of dog memes on the internet. Here’s to the ThunderCats – through many moons and continued hiss-terical battles against evil. Paws and claws up, here’s to another fur-tastic 40!

Catch a glimpse of the evolution of ThunderCats since its grand debut back on January 23, 1985, in the US. Drawing admiration with its unique ensemble of feline-human hybrids, the series created quite a stir, enjoying a four-year run and making a strong mark on the 80s’ nostalgia scene.

A successful franchise even after four decades, its charm hasn’t ebbed. Just as memorable as the era’s other animated series such as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and Transformers, it has gone on to delight fans with a reboot and an entertaining comedy series. Be it for frequent or fleetingly nostalgic trips back to the 80s, this enduring franchise continues to capture the imagination of many.

The Advent of ThunderCats: 1985-1989

Let’s go back in time to explore the series’ inception and the masterminds behind its creation.

Born out of the creative genius of Tobin Wolf (1922 to 1999), the idea of ThunderCats skyrocketed from sketches in 1981 to an entire series. After Woo’s toy and board game designs carved a niche for him, his concept for ThunderCats saw light under Stan Weston’s presidency at Leisure Concepts.

The allure of the concept caught Rankin/Bass’ fancy, leading them to bring it to life. However, the invaluable partnership with Pacific Animation Corporation in Japan was crucial in turning this concept into attractive animation.

New Dawn for ThunderCats: 2011-2012

During the 2000s, animated series prized for their unique and fascinating concepts made a massive return. Notably, the success of shows like the anime-inspired Avatar: The Last Airbender and Ben 10 kickstarted a new era in animation. Naturally, the time seemed ripe for another reboot of ThunderCats, bringing the franchise back to life for a new generation.

A Roaring Approach: ThunderCats Roar – 2020

Following the cancellation of the 2011 reboot, Michael Jelenic continued his association with Cartoon Network, co-developing the superhero comedy series Teen Titans Go. This unconventional reboot triggered the idea to revisit ThunderCats with a fresh, comedic perspective.
