Well, folks, what do we have here? Another marvellously creative wizard of the art that is animation. Torill Kove, hailing all the way from Norway, now sprinkling her cartoon magic in the chill lands of Canada. She’s dabbled in the whimsical tale of ‘The Danish Poet,’ which, by the way, copped an Oscar. She’s painted visual stories of the unlikely blend of royal wardrobe and domestic life in ‘My Grandmother Ironed the King’s Shirts.’ And let’s not forget ‘Me and My Moulton,’ another tick-off in the grand list of Oscar nominations. 30 episodes into Animation One-On-Ones, and we’re still being served the crème de la crème of the animation universe. I tell you, if this keeps up, we might just have to rename Hollywood to Animwood!
Meet Torill Kove, a Norway native and present resident of Canada, who is known for Oscar-winning animations like The Danish Poet and Oscar-nominated creations such as My Grandmother Ironed the King’s Shirts and Me and My Moulton. Her recent production, Maybe Elephants, draws from family dynamics and memory imperfections, unfolding the life-shifts of three sisters as they move from Norway to Nairobi. With Maybe Elephants, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Torill Kove narrates her own adolescent experiences in a tight-knit family facing the impacts of individual desires. The family relocates from dependable Norway to exciting 1970s Nairobi, Kenya. The returning cast ofMe and My Moultonproject enlivens Maybe Elephants, that investigates familial repercussions coming from a mother’s restlessness. Through witty dialogues, spirited colors, and animated soundscapes, Maybe Elephantscelebrates Kove’s youthful exploration of Nairobi’s energetic culture. This animation short encapsulates nostalgic family trips, teenage adventures, and life’s turning-points, beautifully revealing that perfect realities can be found within imperfect memories.
