Unfolding in the appealing 2D animation style infused with Japanese cultural aesthetics, My Grandfather is a Nihonjin chronicles the journey of Noboru, a 10-year-old of Japanese descent seeking to understand his cultural roots. His grandfather Hideo, who has long evaded his history, steps in to tell his story. As Noboru steps into family territories unknown, he unearths an unknown uncle.

Helmed by Celia Catunda and penned by Rita Catunda, who adapted Oscar Nakasato’s celebrated novel, this enchanting 2D animation film delves into identity, resilience, and the weight of heritage through a family negotiating the waves of immigration. The visuals draw inspiration from the lively works of Oscar Oiwa, a Brazilian-Japanese artist of contemporary times. Producers Kiko Mistrorigo and Ricardo Rozzino from Pinguim Content have created a touching and visually enthralling journey blending Japanese culture with the emotional richness of Brazilian storytelling.
