Acclaimed French director Bruno Collet returns to the spotlight with a new stop-motion short – ATOMIK TOUR – four years after his Oscar-nominated and Annecy Cristal-winning film MEMORABLE. Now in production in France, this collaboration between Vivement Lundi ! (France) and MAUR Film (Czech Republic) is expected to hit screens next year.
ATOMIK TOUR takes audiences to the radioactive region of Chernobyl, where a young YouTuber unwittingly stirs the spirits of the 1986 nuclear disaster victims. This is Collet’s latest stop-motion short film that presents a personal perspective on dark tourism – a travel trend that explores sites associated with death and disasters.
The director has always believed that destinations associated with tragic events carry certain energies. From Pompeii to D-Day landing beaches, concentration camps and ground zero in New York. These places, albeit decreasingly so, were once revered and respected monuments of history. They have unfortunately become more tourist attraction than historical reminder.
Collet had long held a desire to write a film set in Chernobyl. The idea, however, found its shape only after he came across Yolocaust, the work of German-Israeli artist Shahak Shapira. The film evolves from a typical ghost movie to a profound exploration of memory.
To bring this ambitious project to life, long-time Bruno Collet collaborator Vivement Lundi ! has teamed up with Czech Oscar-nominated organization MAUR film.
When Bruno and Jean-François approached me with the script for ATOMIK TOUR, I had no second thoughts. Over and above its connection to our region, Ukraine, it presented a unique portrayal of Chernobyl and the unusual reasons that attract tourists to the site. Bruno has a remarkable capacity for focusing on unconventional subjects with quiet intensity.
Martin Vandas, CEO – MAUR Film
The Czech Film Fund granted a considerable support of € 80.000 to ATOMIK TOUR, aiding Vivement Lundi! to secure a budget of € 300.000 funded by CNC, France Télévisions, the Breton regional fund Bretagne Cinéma, TVR, Tébéo, TébéSud, Prociep, and Angoa. Both, the French and Czech teams will share the work, with the filming process having commenced last week and anticipated for completion in December, with a spring release target.
