The 4th Craft International Animation Festival was a blast that left audiences’ eyeballs dancing with glee. With action-packed screenings, mind-bending conferences, and creativity-overflowing workshops, it was a carnival for animators.

A Winner is Announced!

In a decision more nerve-wracking than watching a Ghibli movie without subtitles, our esteemed jury panel crowned “KUUMBA UMBO” as the winner of the Craft Award for Best Professional Movie. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the jury, the animation gastronomes who had the herculean task of picking a winner from a smorgasbord of animation treats. Hafidz Azroi, Sirada Chitvathananont, Phil Mitchell, and Hassan Muthalib, we applaud you for doing this gigantic job!

In the world of 3D animation, there are masterpieces just waiting to play out in pixels. The Craft International Animation Festival just shone a spotlight on one such gem, “KUUMBA UMBO”. With Phil Mitchell – dream-weaver of numerous colorful worlds, Hassan Muthalib- the man who created magic with Malaysian tales, Sirada Chitvathananont – an animation whisperer, and Hafidz Azroi – lover of every pixel in 3D space, the festival was nothing short of magical. As the proverb goes, ‘with big power comes big responsibility’, we’ve seen this in live action with the selection of the winner. The 4th Craft may be over but the echoes of its success still hum in the air. Here’s to many more animated celebrations to come! Experience the highlights and revealing the winners of the 4th CRAFT International Animation Festival in Malang, East Java, Indonesia – A weeklong celebration of global animation.

Highlighting CURIOSA – Directed by Tessa Moult-Milewska and produced by the National Film and Television School, United Kingdom

The International Competition Jury, made up of Hafidz Azroi, Sirada Chitvathananont, Phil Mitchell, Hassan Muthalib, awarded the Best Professional Movie to KUUMBA UMBO / Birth of Form, directed by Ekaterina Ogorodnikova, for its imaginative portrayal of the loss of culture and traditions in today’s world. The Best Student Movie title went to CURIOSA, directed by Tessa Moult-Milewska, for its darkly comedic exploration of human relationships.

In the Southeast Asia Competition, the jury, composed of Anastasiya Verlinskaya, Grzegorz Wacławek, Chi-Sui Wang granted the Best Professional Movie award to THE DALANG’S TALE, a compelling exploration of domestic violence. The award for Best Student Movie was given to TANKBOY, appreciated for its combination of exceptional timing, impressive design, and a relatable story.

The International Competition’s adult audience chose SWALLOW FLYING TO THE SOUTH as their top pick, while in the Southeast Asia Competition, SPLISH SPLASH earned the audience’s award.

The younger viewers chose their own winner in the SHORTS FOR KIDS COMPETITION, favoring KIDS IN WINTER by Maing Caochong.
