Award-Winning Director gets ‘Ovary-Active’
‘Ovary-Acting’ Expected to Cause a Scene at Tribeca 2025
Whoopi Goldberg adds another Egg-citing piece to Animated Shorts Curated Collection
Looks like our favorite animation queen, Ida Melum, is at it again, folks! Prepare to use your 3D glasses for something other than pretending you’re in a sci-fi movie. This time she’s ‘Ovary-Acting’, and no, we aren’t talking about a melodramatic opening scene after eating too much chocolate. It seems Melum traded zombies for eggs, and remarkably, it isn’t for breakfast.
How ‘ova’ the top can she get? We are eagerly waiting to find out! With Synnøve Karlsen performing, a name that’s more complicated than my last relationship status, we are sure it’s going to be a ‘crack’ing performance (get it? Eggs, cracks? Ah, never mind).
Whoopi is lending her golden touch here too. Looks like this collection is getting more star-studded than my grandma’s quilt! Can’t wait to catch this ‘egg-stravaganza’ at the Tribeca Fest in 2025. In the meantime, I suggest we all start practicing our shocked ‘egg-spressions’.
Embracing the success of her BAFTA and Annie award-winning short film Night of the Living Dread, director Ida Melum is back with her latest stop-motion masterpiece, Ovary-Acting. Scheduled for its world premiere at the prestigious 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, the movie is on the esteemed roster of animated shorts curated by Whoopi Goldberg. The film, starring Synnøve Karlsen (Last Night in Soho, Miss Austen) and Sofia Oxenham (Extraordinary), has also been selected for competition at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
Ovary-Acting: A Masterpiece by Director Ida Melum
In Ovary-Acting, a harmonious blend of hilarity and deep personal insight, Melum delves into the multifaceted journey of contemplating parenthood in today’s world. Tackling complex aspects such as biology, ethics, practicalities, and bodily autonomy with humour and honesty, the movie offers a fresh perspective captured through intricate animation. With the support of esteemed institutes such as the Norwegian and Swedish Film Institutes, and Film i Väst, it solidifies Melum’s spot in the hierarchy of contemporary animation.
Melum once again joins forces with BAFTA-nominated writer Laura Jayne Tunbridge, with a script that perfectly encapsulates humour and heart. An international team, comprising Kjersti Greger, Michelle Brøndum, and Johan Edström, has contributed their distinctive skills to achieve this production.
Svein Erik Okstad, the wizard behind the production and character designs, bestows enchantment to the world of Ovary-Acting with his detail-oriented designs. The film’s visual storytelling is amplified by DOP Jøran Wærdahl’s expertise in puppet animation cinematography.
Award-winning Editor Lesley Posso, known for her long-standing collaboration with Melum, masterfully shapes the narrative flow of this film.
Adding to the captivating storytelling is an enchanting score by Joseph Stevenson and an original melody by Alastair McNamara which delightfully pays tribute to classic Hollywood and Broadway musicals.
With its unique blend of absurd comedy, social commentary, and animation craftsmanship, Ovary-Acting is set to charm the global audience and celebrate the creative potential of stop-motion animation.
Scheduled for its debut at the 2025 Tribeca Festival on June 7th, 5:30 pm at New York’s Shorts Theater in Spring Studios, Ovary-Acting is also part of the 2025 Official Selection at Annecy
