Animation is about to get a major makeover in Japan with ANIAFF.

For all you animation nerds out there, it’s time to power up your rendering engines. Japan has decided to go big or go home with their newly announced Aichi Nagoya International Animation Film Festival. So artists, now is your chance to animate your wildest dreams and submit them from June 11. Who knows, you might become the next Hayao Miyazaki. All this is happening in Nagoya, a city famous for its castle, penguins, and now, 3D animations. Let’s just say, Japan’s animation scene is about to get real lit!

On Monday 2nd June, a press conference was held in Tokyo, Japan unveiling the inaugural Aichi Nagoya International Animation Film Festival (ANIAFF) set to take place in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The ANIAFF official website and FilmFreeway are set to open film submissions for its feature film competition starting 11th June.

The festival is all set to entertain audiences from the 12th to the 17th of December.

Submitting Your Animated Masterpiece: The Guidelines

The window for submissions: 11th June (Wed.) at 6:00 p.m. till 30th September (Tue.) at 11:59 p.m. (Japan Time)

The prerequisites:

  • All kinds of animation films are welcomed but the film duration must be at least 40 minutes and the film should have been completed after January 2024
  • Any film not presented in English or Japanese must possess English subtitles
  • Rights to all content – music, characters, images/videos – must be legitimized such that the director, producer, and applicant face no hindrances while screening the film at ANIAFF

The incentives: Selected films at ANIAFF will be critically evaluated by an esteemed panel of juries who will be awarding the following prizes to the top-ranked submissions:

  • Grand Prix – 1,000,000 yen plus a Gold Shachi* trophy
  • Jury Prize – 500,000 yen in addition to a Silver Shachi trophy
  • Audience Award – 200,000 yen along with a Red Shachi trophy

* Shachi - A legendary creature possessing the head of a lion paired with the body of a carp

Held in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, termed as “the manufacturing capital of Japan,” ANIAFF aspires to become a leading international animation film festival aiming at fostering and promoting animation culture and industry. The festival concentrates on premiering a plethora of animations to the international market with a base principle of “Creators First”. In addition to screening diverse films, it will also serve as a networking platform for creators and producers, through diverse talks, conferences, and workshops. The festival serves as a forum for animation industry veterans and emerging talents, providing a space for pitch meetings during the festival, quite similar to MIFA in Annecy.
