Meet the Cat who Keeps Scoring the Cream of Prizes

Enrique Gato, Master of Animated Acclamations

All right, folks, it seems like our very own animation maestro, Enrique Gato, has more lives in the prize lane than your average alley cat. In the year 2025 (Yes, distant future. We aren’t quite time travelers, but man, this news propelled us into the fast-forward mode!), he will add the Honorary Diboos Award to his overflowing glass display case of illustrious trophies.

At this point, it’s not even about if Enrique can grab another award, but rather about how big a storage unit he needs to accommodate them all! Given by Diboos, the award is as quirky as it sounds. After all, it is part of the 17th edition of something called the Weird Market (and No, it isn’t a flea-market for odd socks and three-wheeled bicycles.)

Now, the real question is how they’ll manage to surprise him with his upcoming award when we’re all talking about it like it’s tomorrow’s breakfast. Let’s face it; though the “future prediction” element might have caused a bit of a spoiler; when it comes to celebrating stellar contributions to the animation industry, we believe Mr. Gato’s success story can perfectly weather this minor story leak. Just remember where you heard it first when 2025 rolls around! This kitty’s got paws and moves!

Heads up, Gato! Your fans expect another grand acceptance speech and remember, if you run out of space for awards, community storage is always an option. Might we suggest a climate-controlled unit for that shiny new Diboos? Keep us in the loop when you snatch up the next honor; we might do the next spoiler alert!

Acclaimed Animator and Film Maker, Enrique Gato, is set to receive the esteemed ‘Honorary Diboos Award’ in 2025 for his contribution to the Spanish Animation Industry. This prestigious award is presented by Diboos, the Spanish Federation of Animation and Visual Effects Production Companies, as part of the 17th edition of the Weird Market. Enrique’s work has notably promoted Spanish animation within the country and globally. On October 3, the Animation, Video Games and New Media Market in Valencia will honor him, the brains behind one of Spanish cinema’s most successful franchises, Tadeo Jones. “Enrique is an excellent ambassador for Spanish animation, demonstrating the industry’s potential, durability, and ever-growing influence in the film world,” states Diboos president, Nathalie Martinez. Alongside Enrique, previous recipients include Pablo Berger.

Enrique Gato, born 1977 in Valladolid, is a dynamic animator and film director who has successfully given Spanish animation cinema a global platform. He is a co-founder of Lightbox Academy studio and heads its animation department. His work includes feature films like ‘Atrapa la Bandera’ and the ‘Las aventuras de Tadeo Jones’ trilogy (with a fourth in the pipeline). Enrique’s creative productions have earned millions in revenue for the Spanish audio-visual industry and brought eight Goya Awards, a few Gaudí Awards and various recognitions at elite events such as Annecy Festival and the Platino Awards.

Initially, Enrique kickstarted his career as a game character animator and computer engineer. His expertise in 3D animation software has helped him devise tools that speed up animation processes, essential for his large-scale projects. His first cinematic short film, won the Goya Award for Best Animated Short Film and 64 other national and international awards, creating a new cultural icon in Spanish animation.

His works have been showcased around the globe, competing against major Hollywood studios like Pixar, Disney, and DreamWorks in terms of release week theater count. This was evident with his recent hit: ‘Tadeo Jones 3: La tabla esmeralda,’ which made over €20 million outside Spain, released across five continents. Despite the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, the film’s premiere significantly boosted the domestic cinema’s annual cumulative market share.

The Weird Market’s 17th edition is powered by Creative Europe MEDIA, Valencia City Council, Valencia Innovation Capital and also supported by RTVE, Movistar Plus+, Valencia Game City, HP, Tangram Solutions, BCN Game Fest, DIBOOS, AVEPA, Animat, and others.
