Explore my story of cultural conflicts as an Indian-Sri Lankan raised in the UK: a personal journey rendered into a 1-minute 2D animation, inspired by a diary entry.

What inspired the animation?

The voices of South Asian artists online, addressing wrestling with identity, echoed my own experiences and inspired me to share my struggle. Artistically, Studio Ghibli’s intricate presentations of everyday life and The Prince Of Egypt’s 2D-3D animations have heavily influenced the aesthetics of my work.

Dive deeper into the journey…

This project, a culmination of my second year at university, comes from personal years-long struggle with my cultural identity, specifically the tension between appreciation and apprehension. Recent encounters have led me towards embracing my culture, but some old hesitations still persist. This animation pans through this emotional landscape, contrasting internal conflicts with the profound beauty of my culture.

The animation, shared on Tiktok and Instagram, received responses from POC audiences globally, resonating with their own experiences. The communal feeling of shared stories was deeply heartening, more so knowing that my creation could offer them solace.

The Process behind the film’s creation?

The starting point was the diary entry I wished to feature as subtitles, setting the atmosphere. The discordant yet enchanting Carnatic musical piece perfectly resonated with the intended tone. After storyboarding, I used Clip Studio for the animatic and then Blender for the 3D environments. After extensive experimentation with framing, lighting and textures, my 2D animation was ready to be shared with the world.
