Remember how the world went nuts when Toy Story 3 did the unthinkable and added a third part to their already awesome duo? Yeah, this sort of feels the same. Custom Nuts and Baboon Light the Way with Two Seasons of Innovative “Battuta” Animation

With two seasons fully funded and in the pre-production phase, production for this animation is a global effort, happening across Japan, the US, and the MENA region.

Offering a quirky, humorous interpretation of the renowned 14th-century explorer, our hero, Battuta, is depicted as a child filled with big dreams and a relentless curiosity. The young Battuta, with a magical travel trunk and a hilarious donkey at his side, travels the uncharted parts of the world, stirring up trouble wherever he goes.

Headed by Silas Hickey and Mike de Seve, Custom Nuts and Baboon, the Tokyo and New York-based studios behind Battuta, specialize in character-focused animation, striking visual humor, and captivating storytelling. Ibn Battuta’s hybrid anime approach seamlessly meshes these elements in each scene.

The series is crafted by an internationally renowned team: accomplished writers, artists, animators, designers, and directors from diverse parts of the world. They perfectly blend charming, child-centered storytelling typical of kodomomuke anime with lighthearted, family-appropriate humor. The result is smart, high-energy entertainment that’s built for worldwide viewership – appealing to children and their families alike. “We’ve been fortunate to collaborate with some of the most gifted individuals in this industry, and they’ve been incredibly enthusiastic about bringing Battuta to life,” added Hickey. “We’re thrilled about the forthcoming announcements on this project.”

Ibn Battuta isn’t just a showcase of modern design, but it’s also a unique animated IP with a firm grounding in regional heritage that still carries huge global appeal. The series has piqued the interest of broadcasters and streaming platforms looking for content that combines cultural character with universally relatable humor and emotion. It’s crafted for the long run, offering potential expansion into publishing, licensing, and digital platforms.

Preview materials for Ibn Battuta will be accessible post Annecy/MIFA 2025 by appointment, along with three more anime hybrid titles based on epic Middle East characters. Among these is Hamza, an exciting series for teens and young adults, inspired by the legendary tales of Amir Hamza.
