The Grand Return of LightBox Expo 2024 (LBX)
A Gathering of Stars in the World of Animation, Illustration, and Video Games
Highlights of this Spectacular Event in Pasadena
So, what we have here is essentially Coachella for the creative geeks, artists, and video gamers. Proving that art parties don’t always involve berets and abstract finger painting, LBX is rolling out the red carpet for the Avengers of animation, the Picassos of Pixar, and the Sith Lords of Star Wars. This October, the creative scene in Pasadena will be lit, literally, and I’m not talking about a moonlit pumpkin spice latte picnic. Hold on to your sketch pads and graphic tablets, folks. Be ready to game on and animate, because LBX is bringing the creative storm to town! It’s like Santa Claus decided to come early, but instead of a fluffy beard, he’s wearing storyboard illustrations and wielding a light saber. And remember, just as one does not simply walk into Mordor, one does not simply miss LBX.
LightBox Expo (LBX), an exceptional three-day event that unites creatives from diverse backgrounds to spark a shared zeal for art, has now unveiled its promising programming lineup, original demos and participating artists including game changers like Chris Sanders, Colin Lorimer, Constantine Sekeris and many more!
“LightBox Expo is my go-to hub for inspiration,” confessed Chris Sanders, writer and director of the acclaimed Dreamworks film The Wild Robot. “It’s honestly one of the best assemblages of comic, film, game, and graphic artists on the planet!”
Brainchild of character designer Bobby Chiu (Alice in Wonderland) and event organizer and filmmaker Jim Demonakos (Drawing Monsters), LBX is your one stop to get under the skin of major franchises such as Star Wars, Devil May Cry, Wallace & Gromit, Moana 2 and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Plus, you get to watch the creator of Dinotopia, James Gurney, paint “Colossal Characters” live and in the flesh!
The creators often describe LBX as a celebration ‘for artists and by artists.’ It offers a peek into the creative genius of artists working across multiple disciplines,” said Bobby Chiu, co-creator of LightBox Expo.
With the bar set high after the roaring success of last year’s event that drew nearly 15,000 attendees, this October sees panels hosted by pioneers from Disney, Netflix, Pixar, Laika, and more. Explore over 200 hours of programs, demos, panels, workshops and more! You can access the complete content schedule here https://lightboxexpo.com/
The other half of the LBX creator team, Jim Demonakos, commented, “We’re thrilled to welcome new supporters such as 20th Television Animation, Laika, Walt Disney Imagineering and others.”
Programming Bonanza from Disney and Netflix
This year’s programming sees over 20 hosted panels from Netflix and The Walt Disney Conglomerate. The expansive list includes panel discussions on storytelling through character design at Pixar, to a behind the scenes insight into concept art for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and more.
Spotlight on International Animation on October 25
Among the many events lined up, The Glassworker, the first-ever Pakistani 2D hand-drawn animated film will premiere in the U.S. at this year’s LightBox Expo. The screening is open to anyone with an LBX event badge.
Dive into the World of Video Games
Adi Shankar, the creative mind behind the upcoming Devil May Cry series, will be presenting intriguing insights into his creation on Sunday.
Concept Art Awards Honoring Excellence
Every year, LBX hosts The Concept Art Awards to acknowledge the stellar concept art from film, TV and video games. This year, Star Wars legends, Doug Chiang and Terryl Whitlatch, will receive the Lifetime Achievement award.
