In Starling, a quirky spirit descends from the sky to celebrate her birthday at home. However, she loses her way amid rainclouds and lands in her childhood city of Istanbul, where a journey of memories unfold. In her spiritual form, she relishes the experiences that once made her happy.

This film is a heartfelt tribute to my friend who passed away from cancer, recounting her vibrant life and undying love for those around her. I wanted to convey that her spirit continues to spread joy and love, despite her absence.

-Mitra Shahidi (Director, Starling)

Securing the Best Animated Short award at the Tribeca Film festival, Starling has been crafted under Pixar’s co-op program. It’s a collective initiative providing equipment access to Pixar employees to encourage and achieve their distinct creative projects.

Iranian-American Mitra Shahidi, hailing from Istanbul, followed her passion to America to study animation. She graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and ascended through different cinematic roles eventually landing at Pixar Animation Studios, where she contributed to the Oscar-nominated Luca and the much-anticipated Elio.
