Trolls Rock On

These lovable miniatures have certainly come a long way from gathering dust on toy shop shelves! Now cooler than ever, they are headlining their very own animated musical party. Prepare to relive your childhood memories, as DreamWorks adds a modern, high-energy twist to our beloved Troll Dolls. They’ve not only been reimagined but have also embarked on sparkling, action-filled adventures backed by catchy chart-topping tunes to get feet tapping.

My Two Cents

Well, what can we say? DreamWorks sure knows how to dust off the old and spruce it up for the new! It wouldn’t be surprising if those adorable trolls started their own pop band soon – they’ve got the aesthetics, they’ve got the rhythm, heck, they’ve probably got better hair than most of us! The return of the Good Luck Troll Dolls has put a nostalgic twist on modern entertainment like adding glitter to glue; it’s messy, colorful, and so much fun. One thing’s for sure – these guys aren’t going back to gathering dust on toy store shelves. They’re too busy singing their hearts out and lighting up our screens. Rock on, trolls, rock on!

Coming off the success of DreamWorks’ 2016 remake of the classic Good Luck Troll Dolls, Trolls has become a cultural sensation. With a vibrant, colorful aesthetic and toe-tapping tunes, it’s captured the hearts of a new generation, spawning television series, holiday specials, and sequels, the most recent being Trolls World Tour.

The franchise’s third installment recently premiered in the UK (with a US release slated for November), and Skwigly had the privilege of an advanced screening. We accompanied our favorite characters, Poppy and Branch, on a new adventure replete with both familiar and fresh faces. The question remains: does Trolls Band Together strike a harmonious chord or miss the mark?

The latest narrative centers on an attempt to save a fellow band and family member by brothers John Dory and Branch following a wedding disruption. Along for the journey are Branch’s girlfriend, the delightfully quirky Queen Poppy, and Tiny Diamond, all working together to mend past disputes and foster familial bonds.

The film, with its 92-minute run time, is ambitious, however, its numerous subplots, themes and characters can feel overwhelming, potentially diluting the central plotline and depth of the characters. The myriad elements struggle to cohesively mesh together, despite the charm and allure of returning and new faces.

Despite a cluttered narrative and shuffling character involvement, the animation team has once again delivered a stylistic and vibrant visual experience. The ornateness and meticulous details are unmistakably impressive and are sure to captivate fans, old and new.

While the influx of characters may disrupt the plot’s potency, each new introduction displays distinct personalities and expressions, oftentimes outshining returning cast members. There’s a discernible effort in character diversification, even if they don’t always seamlessly fit into the narrative.

The new settings introduced in this film sketch an imaginative landscape, from bead-shaped ocean islands to cotton candy towns bathed in neon lights, displaying a pleasant visual palate, even if they feel recycled from Trolls World Tour.

The soundtracks for Trolls Band Together leans heavily on the pop genre, which may not cater to all audiences. The incorporation of other genres that charmingly diversified Trolls World Tour‘s soundtrack is distinctly absent.

The newly composed songs, while aligning with the film’s boyband theme, don’t quite compare in catchy factor to tunes like Can’t Stop the Feeling and The Other Side from previous chapters.

Trolls Band Together, despite boasting vibrant visuals consistent with the series, falls short due to a congested, underwhelming narrative, solidifying its rank as the least successful in the trilogy to date. Resembling scattered art supplies on canvas, it presents as a potentially beautiful, yet messy, masterpiece.

Trolls Band Together is available in UK theaters now.
