As the BFI Flare London: LGBTQIA+ film festival is on the horizon, we’ve just spotted a preview for an emotive stop-motion animated short, The Journey of Love: Two Black Boys in Paradise, directed by creative genius Baz Sells and inspired by a poem from the iconic writer, Dean Atta.

Lovingly penned by Sells, Atta, and Ben Jackson, and accompanied by the engaging voice of Jordan Stephens, The Journey of Love: Two Black Boys in Paradise was brought to life by Manchester’s own One6th Animation Studio, with help from the BFI Short Form Animation Fund and seed funding support from esteemed personalities Ian McKellen and Partizan Films.

Delving into the lives of Eden (19) and Dula (18) – two young Black men on a quest for self-acceptance while openly expressing their love – the film promises a glimpse into a utopia devoid of shame and judgement. This captivating story will be showcased at BFI Flare – Europe’s leading LGBTQIA+ film festival on Sunday, March 23, as part of the LGBTQIA+ shorts round-up within the Festival’s Hearts strand, following its world premiere at Anima Brussels and screenings at Finland’s Tampere Festival and the American Documentary and Animation Film Festival later this month.

Working with Dean has been a pleasure, much like being drawn to a piece that encapsulates belonging in all its complexity. The animation exudes love – the greatest gift life has to offer.

-Jordan Stephens (Narrator, The Journey of Love: Two Black Boys in Paradise)

The incredible journey of creating an animation stunned me. It’s amazing how many talented hands have been involved in this project. I initially wrote a poem meant to evoke a cinematic mental image. But now, we’re taking that imagination further by presenting it as a visual spectacle!

-Dean Atta (Executive Producer and Writer, The Journey of Love: Two Black Boys in Paradise)

We are thrilled to share our film with audiences in Europe and the USA. This film serves as a beacon of joy that comes with self-acceptance and self-love, a reflection of my personal journey as a gay man. I hope it brings a sense of warmth, hope, and belonging to all viewers.

-Ben Jackson (Producer and Writer, The Journey of Love: Two Black Boys in Paradise)

This film has been a rewarding challenge, visualizing a stunning poem that celebrates Black and queer identity. We are grateful for the opportunity given by BFI and Dean, which allowed us to explore the transformative power of personal victories and self-acceptance, and the joy they bring.

-Baz Sells (Director and Writer, The Journey of Love: Two Black Boys in Paradise)

The film genuinely touched upon all the nuances of Black queer love and sexual expression. Being involved with such a project has been a privilege, and I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see that.
